“My paintings unearth new mythologies. We arrive at the scene as it is presented, perhaps too early or too late. I wish to create an insular world that is governed by its own logic, one that is queer, empathetic, horrifying, and provisional.
As the pendulum of queer liberation swings backward, I want to articulate new postures of defiance and defeat. Can a figure be devastated and remain complete? Degas and Warhol are precedents in my path of closing the gap between sketch and composition, eliminating doubt and unearthing mystery.
Representation thrives in the literal and manifests irony. There can be no other options than what is depicted and that is horrifying: defiantly pulling out your teeth with pliers – dragonflies yearning to reach the other’s branch amidst a ravaged world – two men making gory love – all challenging language’s inability to hold the consequences of love in our time.”
